Ten ways to finish a garment

Wet and dry, under one roof. Most looks are three of these in a set order, and that order is the formula.

Garment dyeing

Wet

Colour applied to a finished garment, so the dye sits over the weave, the seams and the thread. An over-dyed jean never looks like a piece-dyed one.

Laser

Dry

An image burned into the surface of the cloth: whiskers, wear, graphics, a photograph. No water, no stencil, and repeatable to the millimetre on the thousandth garment.

Resin

Dry

A denim finishing process that uses resin application to enhance and preserve dry-process effects, create a 3D whisker effect, and improve texture and dimensional appearance.

Tacking

Dry

A denim finishing technique used to create localized, high-point abrasion and pronounced worn effects throughout the garment, often emphasizing raised areas and creases.

Spray finishing

Dry

Colour or bleach laid on by hand with a gun, where a drum can't put it. Respirators on, booth running.

Hand sanding

Dry

The garment goes on an inflatable form and sandpaper goes where a body would wear it: the front of the thigh, the seat, the knee. Slow, and impossible to fake convincingly.

Grinding and destroy

Dry

Hems, pockets and seams taken back so they read as years old rather than minutes. The difference between distressed and damaged is about thirty seconds.

Stone washing

Wet

Pumice tumbles with the garments and abrades the high points of the weave, exactly where a body wears a jean. The oldest way to take the newness off, and still the most convincing.

Enzyme washing

Wet

Cellulase eats the surface fibres instead of stone. Softer hand, gentler contrast, less damage to the garment and the machine, and a cleaner drum at the end of it.

Ozone

Wet

Fading with ozone gas instead of a wash cycle: the worn-in look, without the water. Our newest machine, and the one that changes the water bill.
